Wat Pa Phu Kon, a white and gold temple on a forested hilltop in Udon Thani

Sakon Nakhon

Northeast · suggested 1-2 days

Sakon Nakhon is a peaceful, culture-rich province and city located in the upper northeast region of Thailand known as Isan. Situated roughly 650 kilometers northeast of Bangkok, it is tucked within the beautiful Phu Phan mountain range and rests along the shores of the massive Nong Han Lake. Often described as an "off-the-beaten-track" destination, Sakon Nakhon is deeply spiritual, famous for its forest meditation temples, rich multi-cultural history (with Thai, Lao, and Khmer roots), unique indigo-dyed fabrics, and high-quality Pon Yang Kham beef.
