Wat Pa Phu Kon, a white and gold temple on a forested hilltop in Udon Thani

Nakhon Si Thammarat

South · suggested 2-3 days

Nakhon Si Thammarat is one of Thailand's oldest cities — a former seat of the Srivijaya empire over 1,500 years old, and for centuries the religious and cultural capital of the South. Its heart is Wat Phra Mahathat, whose great golden chedi is said to hold a tooth of the Buddha and draws pilgrims from across the region. The province stretches from empty Gulf beaches (home to rare pink dolphins at Khanom) up into the Khao Luang mountains — southern Thailand's tallest peaks — and it's the cradle of southern culture: shadow puppet theatre, manora dance, and fiery southern cooking.
