Getting around

  • By Air: The fastest way to arrive is flying directly into Samui Airport (USM), a beautiful open-air airport primarily operated by Bangkok Airways.
  • By Ferry: Budget-conscious travelers can take passenger or car ferries from Surat Thani mainland piers (Donsak) to the island's main piers in Nathon or Lipa Noi.
  • Local Transport: Once on the island, you can get around using local songthaews (converted pickup trucks), motorbike taxis, ride-hailing apps, or by renting your own scooter or car.

Ride-hailing apps

What each service covers and what a city trip costs.

Grab

24/7 · island-wide
Car: 150 – 500 ฿ Bike: 60 – 150 ฿

Covers the ring road and most beaches, with the fare fixed before you book.

Bolt

24/7 · Chaweng, Lamai, airport
Car: 120 – 450 ฿ Bike: 50 – 130 ฿

Often cheaper than Grab, but fewer drivers on the quiet north and east coasts.

inDrive

24/7 · island-wide
Car: 120 – 400 ฿ Bike: 50 – 120 ฿

You propose a fare and drivers accept or counter-offer.

Airport taxi (USM)

Flights · airport
Car: 300 – 500 ฿

Fixed-price cars wait outside arrivals; to Chaweng is usually 300 – 500 ฿.

Songthaews, taxis and airport runs

  • Shared songthaews run the ring road until early evening — 50 – 100 ฿ between neighbouring beaches, about 150 ฿ for a long run.
  • Pay the songthaew driver as you get off; press the buzzer or knock on the cab to stop.
  • Metered taxis are almost unknown on the island — most street taxis quote flat fares, so agree the price before you get in.
  • Motorcycle taxis (win) wait in Chaweng, Lamai and Nathon — 50 – 100 ฿ for short hops.

Fares rise at night and in heavy rain, and app waits are longer on the quieter coasts. Keep small notes — drivers rarely have change for 1,000 ฿.

Fares are estimates for normal traffic and can change with surge pricing, tolls and weather.

Common mistakes
