Khon Kaen

Northeast · suggested 1-2 days

Khon Kaen is the unofficial capital of Isaan, Thailand's wild northeast — a modern, energetic university city surrounded by silk villages, dinosaur dig sites, and some of the best food in the kingdom. The city is built around vast Bueng Kaen Nakhon lake, where locals cycle and eat grilled chicken at sunset beneath the golden nine-storey chedi of Wat Nong Waeng. Out in the countryside the province tells older stories: Phu Wiang is one of Asia's richest dinosaur fossil sites (Siamotyrannus was discovered here), and the weaving villages around Chonnabot produce hand-dyed mud mee silk that is among Thailand's finest. Expect mor lam music, famously friendly locals, and hardly another foreign tourist in sight.
